What do we know of these Contaminants?
PAH (polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons)
Carcinogenic subclasses (benzo (a) pyrene, benz (a) anthracene and dibenz (a) anthracene)
- Exposure to PAH long been known to cause lung, skin and bladder cancer
- PAHs are found in every industry especially where substances are burned such as aluminium smelting and coke production
- Cannot be characterised by a threshold, no absolutely safe exposure level can be defined
- Cancers result from exposure to PAHs over decades
